Forty Years in Cartoons, One World

In today’s world, where increasing polarization, prejudices, and restrictions on freedom of expression prevail, tolerance, dialogue, and pluralism have become more essential than ever. Cartoon art offers a universal language of communication that, through the power of humor, enables peaceful expression of diverse viewpoints. The Aydın Doğan International Cartoon Competition, founded on this understanding, is a prestigious platform that promotes freedom of thought, supports intercultural understanding, and brings together artists from around the world. Over the years, the
competition has become one of the most respected events in cartoon art and is often referred to as the “Oscar of Cartoons”.

Cartoon art has the power to convey strong and lasting messages where words fall short. Sometimes a single drawing can express what lengthy texts cannot - through emotion, irony, and humor. It sparks critical thinking and invites the viewer into a deeper reflection. This power not only elevates the value of cartoon art but also symbolizes resilience in the face of pressure against freedom of expression.

The competition has, for years, provided artists with the opportunity to showcase their works on independent themes. By bringing together the voices of artists from different beliefs and perspectives, it supports a peaceful narrative; in doing so, it unites critical thinking and creative expression on a universal platform. With the global pandemic, the competition adapted to changing world conditions by accelerating its digital transformation; through hybrid jury meetings and online organization, it has reached artists and jury members in the most remote corners of the world. This flexibility has increased the inclusivity of the competition, making it possible to reach wider audiences.

Bringing together artists from all over the world who turn diverse ideas and beliefs into cartoons and enabling them to express their art, the competition has attracted over 9.000 artists from 137 countries over 40 years.
